News - Langen celebrates 50 years of Packaging Innovation

2006 marks the 50th year of an incredible packaging story that began with meat processing.  The Langen story began in 1950 when the Langen family opened a facility specializing in the manufacture and sales of processing machinery for the meat industry in The Netherlands.

In 1956 the first North American facility was established in Ontario, Canada, then known as H.J. Langen & Sons, and the Company continued to operate in meat processing industry.  Customers soon asked if Langen could expand its business to include cartoning machinery, setting the stage for Langen’s reputation as a packaging company that pays attention to its customers.  The new line of packaging machinery was so successful that it became the Company’s core product line.

From this start, Langen established its position as a leader in the design and manufacture of cartoning equipment, and then expanded its knowledge base to become an expert in case packers, accumulators and most recently, robotic packaging and system integration.

In 1996 Molins PLC, a specialist engineering company based in the United Kingdom, added Langen to its packaging group called Molins Packaging Machinery (MPM).  Composed of six main business units as well as strategic arrangements with other global companies, MPM offers packaging expertise from product design and processing on through to end-of-line packaging and total system integration.  Inclusion in MPM ultimately offers Langen’s many customers access to full breadth and depth of MPM’s large engineering base and experience of the other MPM companies, as well as the stability of a strong parent.

Now, in 2006, Langen has never been better positioned to carry its momentum forward and offer customers reliable, cost-effective and high-performance packaging machinery.  The next 50 years will be just as exciting.  On the horizon we see an industry dominated by flexible machinery capable of handling a multitude of products over a business’ life; we see solutions that can quickly adapt between environments, applications, and pack styles; and we also see a greater convergence of machinery and information where the Internet, machines, ERP systems, etc talk to each other and even solve problems.
